Due dates or Time limit to deposit TDS

Last modified on December 16, 2023 by CA Bigyan Kumar Mishra

TDS or Tax Deducted at source has to be deposited with the government within the specified time limit. When tax has been deducted by any person other than government, the deducted amount has to be deposited on or before 7 days from the end of the month in which deduction is made or income tax is due u/s 192 IA.

However, if income or amount is credited or paid in the month of march, then TDS amount has to be deposited on or before 30th April.

For instance, if you have deducted tax from payment to contractors in the month of December 2018, then the deducted TDS amount has to be deposited with the government on or before 7th January 2019. Instead of deducting in the month of January, if you have deducted it in the month of march 2018, then the amount has to be deposited on or before 30th April 2018.

If tax has been deducted by or on behalf of the government, then TDS amount has to be deposited on the same day where payment of tax is without production of IT challan. If payment of tax is accompanied by a challan, then the TDS amount has to be deposited on or before 7 days from the end of the month in which the deduction is made or income tax due u/s 192 IA.

The Assessing Officer may in a special case with the approval of JCIT, permit the payment of TDS on quarterly basis. Quarterly basis of payment is applicable in following cases;

  • Section 192 – Payment of salary and wages
  • Section 194A – Interest other than interest on securities
  • Section 194D – Payment of Insurance commission
  • Section 194H – Commission and Brokerages other than insurance commission

If quarterly basis is allowed, then TDS amount has to be deposited on or before 7 days from the end of the quarter.
