Nifty Vs. Bank Nifty – What is the difference

Both Nifty and Bank Nifty are index owned and managed by NSE Indices Limited.

Nifty is the leading index measuring performance of top 50 companies listed on the National Stock exchange (NSE). Therefore, it’s referred to as Nifty 50.

Within Nifty you have all the leading companies from 13 different sectors such as Banks, oil & gas, auto, cement, Information Technology, FMCG, infrastructure etc.

It is used as a benchmark index to know how you or your portfolio has performed against the overall rate of return of the market. Even mutual funds and other fund managers measure their performance by comparing the rate of return of Nifty 50.

In terms of specific stocks, HDFC bank, Reliance Industries, Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), ICICI Bank, Infosys, ITC and TCS have more weight.

This means performance of these stocks and sectors will affect the performance of Nifty 50. The index is calculated on a real time basis  and rebalances semi-annually.

Exchange traded derivatives contracts linked to NIFTY 50 are also traded at Singapore Exchange Ltd. (SGX)

Nifty Bank is a sectoral index measuring performance of 12 leading banks listed in India. Most of these banks are also part of Nifty 50 index. It is sometimes referred to as Bank Nifty.
